Background of the Study:
Urban renewal programs are implemented to modernize cities, yet their effects on informal settlements remain controversial, particularly in densely populated areas such as Surulere Local Government Area. These programs, aimed at improving urban aesthetics and infrastructure, often result in the displacement of long-established communities (Akinyemi, 2023). The rapid pace of urban development has led to significant shifts in land use, property values, and social dynamics. Urban renewal initiatives sometimes neglect the socio-economic needs of the existing residents, leading to tensions between modernization efforts and community preservation (Balogun, 2024). Recent studies have shown that while urban renewal can drive economic growth, it may also exacerbate inequalities and disrupt social networks (Ogunleye, 2023). This study examines the multifaceted impacts of urban renewal on informal settlements, exploring the balance between urban development and social inclusion (Olumide, 2024).
Statement of the Problem:
Informal settlements in Surulere are adversely affected by urban renewal programs. Residents face displacement, loss of community networks, and increased living costs, which raise concerns about social exclusion and inequity in urban development (Fashina, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of urban renewal on informal settlements.
To examine the socio-economic consequences of displacement.
To propose inclusive strategies for urban renewal programs.
Research Questions:
What are the effects of urban renewal on informal settlements?
How does displacement affect community cohesion?
What measures can ensure equitable urban renewal?
Research Hypotheses:
Urban renewal programs significantly impact informal settlement stability.
Displacement negatively affects social cohesion.
Inclusive policies can mitigate adverse effects of urban renewal.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant for urban planners and policymakers, as it provides insights into the unintended consequences of urban renewal on vulnerable communities. It underscores the need for inclusive development strategies to balance modernization and community preservation (Adetokunbo, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Urban Renewal: Programs aimed at redeveloping and modernizing urban areas.
Informal Settlements: Unplanned and often under-serviced residential areas.
Displacement: The forced relocation of communities due to development projects.
